Valerie Hill-Jackson and Chance W. Lewis recently released, their book, Transforming Teacher Education: What Went Wrong with Teacher Training and How Can We Fix It (Stylus, 2010) at the American Educational Research Conference (AERA) in Denver, Colorado on May 2.with high acclaim. Reviewers advocate, “This volume is one of the most comprehensive and deeply analytical works to appear on teacher education in decades.”

As scholars and practitioners, Hill-Jackson and Lewis noted that teacher preparation programs are not meeting the needs of current and future educators while the state of education for underserved populations still suffers from benign neglect. State and national indicators alert both of us to the fact that certain “pockets of learners” around the country are not achieving and their teachers are not equipped to support their growth.
